A dynamic seating intervention for wheelchair seating discomfort

Filed under: Members, Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 11:19 am

A dynamic seating intervention for wheelchair seating discomfort

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a new user-adjustable wheelchair seating system designed to relieve discomfort for long-duration wheelchair users. DESIGN: This objective was carried out using the newly developed Tool for Assessing Wheelchair disComfort (TAWC) as the primary outcome measure. Two wheelchair users each tested two different designs and feedback from the wheelchair users regarding the first design was used to guide development of the second design. A single-subject research methodology was used, allowing long-duration (up to 2 wks per test) evaluation of the wheelchair seating systems and comparison of subject discomfort levels with those experienced during a baseline period using their own wheelchairs. The experimental medical scooters, handicap scooters seating systems employed existing automotive seating with embedded pneumatic bladders that allowed adjustment of the seat and back-support characteristics. The test wheelchair also had tilt, recline, and elevating leg rests. RESULTS: The two subjects completed limited periods of testing with the first design, both finding poor results with either stable or increased levels of discomfort. Subject feedback was used to redesign the wheelchair seat. After redesign, both subjects tested the second design and found it substantially more comfortable. CONCLUSIONS: The selected research methodology was a very positive method for a progressive wheelchair seating design and the second design provided improved comfort for both users when compared with that experienced using their own wheelchairs and the first test wheelchair. Future research of this type of user-controlled technology is recommended

BBQ FACTS: Keep Everything Clean

Be sure there are plenty of clean utensils and barbeque sauce recipe platters. To prevent foodborne illness, don’t use the same barbecue sauce recipes platter and utensils for raw and cooked meat and poultry. Harmful bacteria present in raw meat and poultry and their juices can contaminate safely cooked food.

Characterization of power wheelchair use in the home and community

Filed under: Members, Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 9:10 am

Characterization of power wheelchair use in the home and community

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the use of power wheelchairs and to determine if multiple measures of mobility and occupancy jointly provide a more comprehensive picture of wheelchair usage and daily activity in full-time power wheelchairs users than daily distance alone. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Subjects’ everyday mobility was measured in their homes and communities for 2 weeks, and prompted recall interviews were conducted by phone. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample (N=25) of nonambulatory, full-time power wheelchair users. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Wheelchair usage was logged electronically, and geolocation and interview data were used to isolate chair use to (1) in the home, (2) not in the home indoors, or (3) outdoors. Distance wheeled, time spent wheeling, number of bouts, time spent in the wheelchair, and the percentage of time in the wheelchair spent wheeling were measured to describe wheelchair use. RESULTS: The median wheelchair user spent 10.6 hours (range, 5.0-16.6h) in his/her wheelchair daily and wheeled 1.085 km (range, 0.238-10.585 km) over 58 minutes (range, 16-173 min) and 110 bouts (range, 36-282 bouts). Wheelchair use varied across subjects, within subjects from day to day, and between environments. handicap scooters bouts outdoors were longer and faster than those wheeled indoors. In a regression analysis, distance wheeled explained only 33% of the variation in the number of bouts and 75% in the time spent wheeling. CONCLUSIONS: Power wheelchair use varies widely both within and between users. Measuring distance, time, and number of bouts provides a clearer picture of mobility patterns than measuring distance alone, whereas occupancy helps to measure wheelchair function in daily activities

Ping Pong

Filed under: Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 12:40 am

Ping Pong

Ping pong or table tennis is a very fast game. As the tiny plastic ball is driven from one side to the other side of the table at lightning speed, a player has a fraction of a second to react and propel the ball back to his or her opponent; indeed it is an ultimate test of agility and body coordination. Playing ping pong requires excellent footwork and body positioning. But more than the stance, a player needs to have an excellent grip on the racket to attain better performance.

Application Enticements?

Filed under: Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 10:30 am

Application Enticements?

Many stores or financial institutions offer enticements such as discounts or prizes when someone fills out an application. If your son or daughter fills out a business line of credit card application “Just because I got 10% off my purchases that day,” the company must be contacted in writing and by phone if they do not plan to use the building business credit card in the future. Simply ‘not using’ it will not stop monthly charges from accruing (including late payments for monthly charges). This is very important and can cause hassles later on if they just ignore the notices of payments due.

Relevance of the Pediatric Powered Wheelchair Screening Test for children with cerebral palsy.

Filed under: Members, Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 6:14 pm

Relevance of the Pediatric Powered Wheelchair Screening Test for children with cerebral palsy.

In a previous study we developed a cognitive assessment battery called the Pediatric medicare power wheelchairs and handicap scooters Screening Test (PPWST) to help clinicians determine a young child’s readiness to drive a powered wheelchair. The current multicenter study sought to determine: (1) whether the PPWST is appropriate for use in a population of children with cerebral palsy (CP) who use joysticks to drive their wheelchair; (2) whether two additional factors (symbolic representation and coping) would increase the predictive power of the PPWST for this group and for children with orthopedic or neuromuscular disabilities only; and (3) whether the test was appropriate for children with severe motor impairments who use switches to control their wheelchair. Fifty children (27 males, 23 females) between the ages of 21 months and 6 years 11 months participated. Twenty-six children (mean age 4 years 4 months, SD 15 months) had triplegic or tetraplegic CP and 24 children (mean age 27 months, SD 5 months) had orthopedic or neuromuscular disabilities. Sixty-nine per cent of children had some limited form of mobility (such as rolling or scooting) but none was a functional ambulator. Each child was assessed with the PPWST and with measures of symbolic representation and coping. After six wheelchair training sessions, driving ability was scored. The PPWST was found to be predictive of functional driving ability for children with CP who used a joystick to control their wheelchair. Assessment of symbolic representation skills increased the predictive power for this group but not for children with orthopedic or neuromuscular disabilities; coping scores did not increase the predictive power for either group. The PPWST accounted for only 20% of the variance in overall driving skills for switch users, and thus is not yet considered an adequate screening device for this group. The PPWST is designed to help clinicians determine whether a child currently has the specific cognitive skills found to be related to powered wheelchair driving but is not intended to be used exclusively to determine whether or not a child is ultimately a candidate for powered mobility.

Credit Card Facts

Credit Card Facts

In this case, a 0 APR building business credit card means that the bank won’t charge you interest or administrative fees for the advertised period of time. Sounds great, doesn’t it? This offer means that regardless of how much you use your 0 APR business line of credit card, you will not have to pay any related fees.

So, where is the catch? It’s quite simple. The bank wants to maintain a long term relationship with you. They can survive for one year without charging you their fees and rates, but after that period of time you will start paying them. It is a marketing tool for increasing their client base and both the consumers and the banks can benefit from it.

Miracle mineral supplement is the new wonder treatment

miracle mineral supplement is the new wonder treatment

There is a powerful electrostatic potential that exists between the chlorine dioxide moleculeand a pathogen. When they encounter one another a change takes place and there is a reaction between them. In the process, the pathogen lets go of up to five up its electrons. This is a fatal blow to the pathogen and a win for the body. Once the electrons have been taken, the mms minerals molecule is used up as well. It is quite harmless even with its extra electrons. It then begins to break down itself, into a harmless salt byproduct. The pathogen has been done away with and all is well. It?s an amazing process that works consistently well.

How mms sodium chlorite kills pathogens

Research and other independent studies shows that the mms minerals has the unique quality of targeting only acidic elements within the body and oxidizing them by changing them atomically. Healthy tissue remains completely and utterly undamaged throughout the process.

Handicap needs awareness

Filed under: Members, Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 4:35 pm

Handicap needs awareness

I would like to raise people’s awareness of handicap scooters needs around the Laboratory workplace. People on crutches, scooters and wheelchairs have some different needs than the ambulatory. I am the first to admit that when I was ambulatory I was unaware of the environment around me in these terms. However, now that I am in a wheelchair, I would like to share with my co-workers some needs and easy-to-do things for people around the Lab.
Doors are a big issue. People in power wheelchairs, scooters etc., need to place themselves to the side of the door to open it. Objects such as trash cans, tables and chairs placed next to the door result in a situation where a disabled person cannot open the door. Please make sure that a 3-foot-wide space is available between the side of the door that opens and any object placed along the wall.
Another issue is bathrooms. If there are multiple stalls available please do not choose the wheelchair accessible stall if you do not need it. It is frustrating and potentially unpleasant to have to wait for the bathroom stall because it is occupied when three other stalls are available.
Wheelchairs, scooters and crutches require more maneuvering room than just the typical human body. Objects piled in hallways can create impassible situations. Imagine not being able to go to a meeting or your office because the hallway was blocked and there was no way around.
Even though it seems like sitting in a wheelchair or scooter requires no effort, disabled people are often plagued by fatigue. And, little tasks such as opening doors can require a great deal of effort. Think about how we would feel to go about the day with a bungee cord around our legs and arms.
I want to thank people for spending an extra second to make life more normal for people who are disabled.

Upper-limb fatigue-related joint power shifts in experienced wheelchair users and nonwheelchair users

Filed under: Members, Projects, Volunteer — Admin @ 8:29 pm

Upper-limb fatigue-related joint power shifts in experienced wheelchair users and nonwheelchair users

This paper evaluates power transfer or shifting across upper-limb segments, resulting from fatigue-inducing wheelchair propulsion. Nineteen manual wheelchair users (WCUs) and ten non power wheelchairs users (NUs) participated in this study. Subjects propelled an instrumented wheelchair ergometer at a workload corresponding to 75% of the peak oxygen uptake attained during a maximal-graded exercise tolerance test. Subjects were required to propel the medicare power wheelchairs for as long as they could at a constant velocity of 3 km/h (32 rpm). The test was terminated when subjects could no longer maintain the target velocity. Peak Performance video-capture system was used to determine upper-limb kinematics. Handrim forces and joint kinematics were used to calculate joint moments and power with the use of an inverse dynamics approach. Results showed that with fatigue, joint power shifts from the shoulder joint to the elbow and wrist joints. Implications for joint injury and propulsion efficiency are discussed.
